Kyle Dean’s MAC V SOG issued 5000 Series SOG Knife that is serial numbered 5084 on the pommel.
In 1969, Kyle S. Dean served with Military Assistance Command Vietnam Studies and Observations Group (MAC V SOG), Command and Control Central (CCC), Recon Company, Recon Team Arizona.
SGT (E-5) Dean processed out of the Army in 1970 after three years’ service with twelve months in Vietnam.
The 5000 Series SOG Knives follow the same basic pattern as that of Ben Baker’s numbered series SOG knives. The difference is the blades temperament color has a bluish hue almost peacock color and are acid etched 5000 on the ricasso. The knives are individually hand stamped with a serial number on the side of the pommel cap that started at 5000. It is uncertain just how many were manufactured.
In interviews with Conrad “Ben” Baker the Deputy Director of CISO, he stated on multiple occasions that the 5000 Series SOG Knives were not procured through Counter Insurgency Support Office. Although it cannot be proven, this leaves only the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) who had the funds and contacts to have the knives manufactured.
