Stephen E. Cavanaugh served three tours in Vietnam. His first tour was in 1961 with Military Assistance Advisory Group (MAAG) as the Deputy Chief of the Training Branch. His second tour was in 1968 – 1970 with Military Assistance Command Vietnam Studies and Observations Group (MAC V SOG) as the forth Chief SOG.
Colonel (O-6) Cavanaugh retired from the Army in 1972 after thirty years’ service with twenty-four months in Vietnam. During his service he had been awarded two Combat Infantryman’s Badges (CIB). He had earned his first CIB in World War II as a paratrooper with the 511th Parachute Company.
