Kara D. Garland served two tours in Vietnam. His first tour was in 1968 with Military Assistance Command Vietnam Studies and Observations Group (MAC V SOG), Forward Operational Base #3 (FOB#3), Khe Sanh, Recon Company and was later reassigned to FOB#1, Phu Bai assigned to Hatchet Force El Dorado. He returned for a second tour was in 1971 with MAC V SOG, Command and Control Central (CCC) / Task Force 2 Advisory Element (TF2AE) assigned to the Hatchet Forces.
The second generation Fat Guard SOG Knives were procured through the Counter Insurgency Support Office (CISO) for Military Assistance Command Vietnam Studies and Observations Group (MAC V SOG) sometime in 1970. The blade design had changed but still retained a short / thick cross guard and white spacers in the handle. Another order was later fulfilled for MAC V SOG, Joint Casualty Recover Center (JCRC / OPS-80) in 1972.
