Joseph B. Messer served six tours in Vietnam. His first tour in January – July 1963 with 1stSpecial Forces Group (ABN), A-114 assigned to Ha Than, RVN. His second tour was in January – July 1964 with 1st Special Forces Group (ABN), A-324 assigned to Plie Mroung, RVN. Joe’s third tour was in October 1964 – April 1965 with 1st Special Forces Group, A-334 assigned to Dak To, RVN before he transferred to help create Eagle Flight, the predecessor to the Mike Force. His fourth tour was in June 1966 with 5th Special Forces Group (ABN), B-51 assigned to Don Ba Tin, RVN before he transferred to Military Assistance Command Vietnam, Studies and Observations Group (MAC V SOG), Forward Observation Base #2 (FOB#2), Recon Company, assigned to Spike Team Wyoming. Messer returned for his sixth tour in 1969 with MAC V SOG, Command and Control Central (CCC), Recon Company and served on Recon Teams California and Arkansas.
Master Sergeant (E-8) Messer retired from the Army in July 1979 after twenty-three years’ service with forty -five months in Vietnam.
