Robert Clapp’s presentation Zippo lighter. The lighter was originally awarded with a Forward Operational Base #1 (FOB#1) affixed to the face and was engraved SSGT ROBERT CLAPP, FOB#1 C&C DET, 5TH SPECIAL FORCES, VIETNAM 65-66 67-68. The veteran had the back engraved with US Basic Airborne Wings and reads: DAKOTA RECON, YEA THOUGH I WALK THROUGH THE VALLEY OF THE SHADOW OF DEATH I WILL FEAR NO EVIL FOR I AM THE QUIETEST SON OF A BICTH IN THE VALLEY.
Robert A. Clapp served two tours in Vietnam. His first tour was in 1965 with the 1st Calvary Division. He returned for a second tour in 1967 with Military Assistance Command Vietnam Studies and Observations Group (MAC V SOG), Forward Operational Base #1 (FOB#1), Recon Company, assigned to Recon Team’s Rhode Island and Dakota.
First Sergeant (E-8) Clapp retired from the Army in April 1985 after twenty-two years’ service with twenty-four months in Vietnam.
